短歌行赠王郎司直

唐代 杜甫

Singer, my friend, of the court. You are at a sudden moment in time, and I am writing to you: "You are able to draw me back? Do not lose heart." You might say that it is difficult for a man to make such an effort, but that's because he has not seen the light yet. So let my mind wander—be patient—and I will come back. The wind sways the flagpole; still the tree stands tall. The sun rises; still the sky lights up. Let your spirit rest—you know it is hard for a man to keep himself upright in a world that keeps changing, and even when he looks down, he knows there is more to the world than what he can see."

(The wind sways the flagpole. The words above draw my attention.)

When I say "I want to bring you back," I am saying not just for myself, but for all of you. This is a moment when I should respect the crowd and not dwell on myself, nor do I need to think about others. Let me return to my purpose—my heart—so that my spirit can rest. That's the way it goes."

(The words "I want to bring you back" mean more than just for yourself.)

Let there be no more attempts at a better life in this world—it will not happen, but it won't either. Let me come back—to my own purpose—that is sufficient."

"That's why I came here," the man said, he didn't know who else was there. There were others too, some from before me and some new ones; perhaps someone even older—no, no one older than those I met in the fields, those I saw on the road, those that walked by the street side, those I heard on the streetside."

"That's why we all came here. We didn't come to live here or make a living in this land—it is not good for anyone of us to do so, and it is also not good to waste one's time wandering in this world that is growing up and changing every day. Let me go back—back to my purpose, which I don't have to know anything about."

(The words "I came here" mean more than just for myself.)

Let me return—to my own purposes—for me, the moment when I saw a man standing there, a man he could see clearly—no one was looking at him—the light that he shone upon his face. Let me let go of all those words and thoughts, and let me come back—to myself—a man who can find his purpose in this world. That is what the universe is for—I know that."

(The words "I came here" mean more than just for myself.)

That's it—end of my talk. Now go out and see what is waiting, and tell the people who will be near you when they come—and listen to them too—so that together we can make a living in this world that is changing every day. That is all I ask for."

(The words "I came here" mean more than just for myself.)
